Paramedics from across the province are asking the OMERS Pension Plan for the same right to negotiate early retirement pensions as police and firefighters. Paramedics have been included in the early public safety occupation (early retirement) provisions of the Income Tax Act since 2005. CUPE paramedics from across the country had lobbied for these changes and the federal government agreed. However, in order to enact the changes for paramedics in Ontario, the OMERS pension plan would have to be amended. In a 50/50 split vote, the OMERS Sponsor’s Corporation refused to implement the changes.
In a joint union campaign sponsored by CUPE, OPSEU, CAW and the SEIU, paramedics will be asking the public, local leaders, politicians and municipal councils to support early retirement for paramedics. The campaign will start with regional in information meetings for paramedics and local union leaders in February/March. The meeting locations and times will are posted here.
All paramedics from across the province are being encouraged to participate in these meetings and this important campaign. Read the letter to paramedics here.
